Masterpiece

PBS has confirmed that the new contemporary set Maigret is officially joining the Fall 2025 Masterpiece lineup, giving the Benjamin Wainwright-starring remake of one of France's most famous detectives the plum premiere slot in October/November. Unlike The Gold (which was confirmed to debut on Sunday, October 5, all of a few days ago), Magriet's exact arrival date is still up in the air, since Masterpiece also has to fit in The Great Escaper. However, the announcement settles the question of which shows PBS plans to run in the first half of the 2025-2026 television season, and which will wait until the new year to appear on our screens.

(Sorry, Forsyte fans! Maybe it'll debut in January 2026 with Miss Scarlet and All Creatures?)

It's been two decades since the last adaptation of Maigret ended in 2005, and even longer since any of these serialized adaptations were shown on an American broadcast network. (The previous version to air in the States was the 1992 ITV series starring the late Michael Gambon in the title role. It ran for two seasons on ITV and PBS's Mystery!, ending in 1993.)

However, even though Americans haven't seen Georges Simenon's famous detective (once second only to Sherlock Holmes) from his best-selling novels in over 30 years, the series has a long history of airing in Europe, including the U.K., France, Germany, and Italy. Between 1960 and 2005, there was at least one small-screen adaptation of Maigret on the air at any given time. That's a lot of pressure on the new series, which currently carries fans' hopes of inspiring the series to return to its former levels of popularity.

Here's the synopsis for Maigret Season 1:

The first contemporary television adaptation of George Simenon’s beloved detective novels, the series reframes Maigret as an unconventional young detective with something to prove, a rising star in the Police Judiciaire, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and an unmatched knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants.

Wainwright will be joined by an ensemble that includes Stefanie Martini (The Gold), Blake Harrison (World on Fire), Nathalie Armin (Showtrial), Reda Elazouar (Sex Education), Kerrie Hayes (The Responder), Shaniqua Okwok (It’s a Sin), and Rob Kazinsky (Star Trek: Section 31).
