Making television shows and movies is always a crapshoot. You can have all the best actors, scripts, sets, and directors, but everything can easily slide sideways if the wrong executive producer gets their way, or a director and actor have very different ideas. Sometimes a show fails just because people weren't into it. It's one reason for all the remakes, reimaginings, and revivals — if it was a hit once, there's a higher chance it could be a hit again.

It's also why Netflix's bottomless coffers give it such an advantage; the streaming service has the funds to throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks. Unlike most networks, it can produce ten miniseries and have nine fail, but still emerge victorious when the last one, in this case a British-set adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel, Stay Close, becomes an ongoing franchise. The franchise has become so successful that other streaming services are seeking to adapt American thrillers, with the notable exception of Amazon, which has just spent whatever it cost to have Corben write a thriller series for Prime Video.

Titled Lazarus, the Coben series is once again set in the U.K. and stars a cast of fan-favorite British actors. However, Amazon Studios isn't foolish enough to try to release it directly in competition with Netflix. Instead, Lazarus will arrive in time for Spooky Season, debuting in October 2025.

Here's Amazon's synopsis:

Harlan Coben’s Lazarus follows Joel Lazarus, who returns home after his father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus, dies by suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can’t be explained. He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father’s death and his sister’s murder 25 years ago.

Sam Claflin (The Count of Monte Cristo) stars as Joel Lazarus, Bill Nighy (Emma) as his father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus, and Alexandra Roach (Killing Eve) as Jenna Lazarus. New cast added since filming started include David Fynn (Belgravia: The Next Chapter) as Seth McGovern, Karla Crome (Toxic Town) as Bella Catton, and Kate Ashfield (Bodies) as Detective Alison Brown.

Since all of Harlan Coben's novels are under a right of first refusal for Netflix, Lazarus is a completely new story that Coben came up with specifically for Amazon, and co-wrote with Danny Brocklehurst, who wrote the screenplays for Netflix's adaptations of Coben's novels Fool Me Once and Stay Close. Director Wayne Che Yip will helm the first two episodes, with Matt Strevens serving as producer. Coben, Brocklehurst, Yip, and Claflin all executive produce alongside Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee for Quay Street Productions.

All six episodes of Harlan Coben's Lazarus will be released on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, on Amazon's Prime Video.
