Sometimes good things really do come to those who wait. Roughly eleven months after its premiere, Netflix has announced that its coming-of-age drama Geek Girl has been renewed for a second season. This news likely comes as a surprise to many, simply because so much time has passed since the series' debut.
Based on the bestselling 2013 novel of the same name by British author Holly Smale, the drama's first season scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, spent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language series, and amassed 28.1M views in its first seven months of release. Ostensibly, it should have been a fairly strong case for an early renewal, but I suppose the adage of better late than never applies here. (And, according to the Deadline report on this news, the delay was likely due to production changes behind the scenes, rather than any commentary on the quality of the show itself.)
Geek Girl follows the story of socially awkward teenager Harriet Manners, who finds herself thrust into the world of fashion after she’s discovered by a modeling agent during a school trip. Suddenly, her life is turned upside down, and as she embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery. Attempting to balance high school and high fashion, Harriet must navigate everything from jealous competition to new tensions with old friends who feel left behind. Luckily, her growing crush on cute fellow model Nick Park is an excellent distraction.
Emily Carey, best known for her turn as a young Allicent Hightower on House of the Dragon, stars as Harriet, opposite Liam Woodrum (Based on a True Story) as the dishy Nick. Both stars have been confirmed to return for Season 2.
Here's the first season synopsis.
Harriet Manners is an awkward, geeky 16-year-old who has spent her life trying to blend in. However, her whole world changes when she catches the eye of a modeling agent while on a school trip to London Fashion Week. Tightly wound agents, reclusive designers, impossibly high heels, and a handsome young supermodel with a great smile – socially awkward Harriet has no idea what she's in for.
Alongside Carey and Woodrum, Emmanuel Imani (The Wheel of Time) will also be returning as Wilbur Evans, with Tim Downie (Good Omens) and Jemima Rooper (The Inheritance) set to reprise their roles as Richard and Annabel Manners.
Geek Girl was co-created for television by Smale and Jessica Ruston (Catch Me a Killer). Zoë Rocha will serve as showrunner for Season 2, with Declan O'Dwyer (Miss Scarlet) once again directing. The writing team will include Smale, Sameera Steward, Sally O’Leary, Grace Link, and Sophie Wu.
“I am beyond excited that Geek Girl has been recommissioned for a second season by Netflix," Rocha said in a statement. "The amazing audience reaction to Season One was truly incredible and we can’t wait to bring this next chapter to life. I’m thrilled to be working with Holly and Emily again, and that Boat Rocker has come onboard, to continue to build and expand the fabulous Geek Girl universe. Let’s see what magic Harriet Manners can sprinkle on to the fashion world this time round.”
Rocha and Robbie von Werz are executive producing for RubyRock Pictures with Smale and Ruston. Other executive producers include O'Dwyer Jeff Norton, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Nick Nantell, and Jon Rutherford for Boat Rocker.
Geek Girl Season 2 is slated to film in summer 2025 ahead of a 2026 release. The series' first season is currently streaming on Netflix.
