Dan Stevens Tells 'The Today Show' He Has to Apologize for 'Downton Abbey' Death a Lot

Oh, Dan Stevens. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super pleased that Downton Abbey is back on my television, and I love all its dramatic moments, great costumes and compelling characters. But I miss Matthew. There, I said it. I’m still not over it, and seeing you out on the promotional circuit for your new film Summer in February’ s US release is a bit rough. I want you to have all the success in the world professionally – of course – but seriously couldn’t you have just done a voiceover with that letter in the first episode of Series 4? Just for a second? Sigh.

Stevens appeared on The Today Show  to talk about life after Downton and to start spreading the word about his latest big-screen role that arrives in US theaters. And since the character he plays in Summer in February seems very close to Matthew Crawley, perhaps it’ll be a balm to all our wounded hearts.

It’s just a good job he’s so darn charming. 

Stevens informed the Today Show audience that he actually spends a lot of his time apologizing to fans on the street about being dead these days. “I get a lot of, 'My wife was very upset by this. You have to apologize to my wife!,'" Stevens said. "Then they call them over. 'Katherine! Come over here. This is the young man that upset you.' 'Say sorry!'" How often does this happen, you might ask? "Almost every day," Stevens added.

Summer in February is already available to screen via video on demand services, and will release in US theaters beginning January 17. The trailer actually looks quite swoony and awesome, so if you’re experiencing severe Matthew withdrawal, this could be a great help.
